Studies Say Biofuels Worse Than Gasoline
This, according to a recent article in Wired Magazine.. (or is it on?) taking from a study published in SCIENCE magazine.

Quote:
The first study, led by Princton University environmental law researcher Timothy Searchinger, found that replacing fossil fuels with corn-based ethanol -- the darling of the U.S. biofuel industry -- would double greenhouse gas emissions for the next thirty years. Even switchgrass, seen as a far more efficient alternative, would produce a 50% bump in emissions.

I've posted this on load of forums.

Corn is not the way to produce biofuel, and while agricultural waste (as shown by Coskata www.coskata.com) is good it doesn't provide enough.

This is the way to produce biofuel:

The whole alternative fuel thing is a bit of a crock, IMO. People think it's right there...on the horizon...FYI...it's a long way off. There's a reason why the internal combustion engine powered by gasoline has been around forever. If there was a better alternative we'd have it already. Take off your tin foil hats the oil industry has not squashed a better technology...they don't exist. Fact is...volume to energy wise gasoline is hard to beat...Diesel is even harder. Plus you don't have to create it...you dig it up (Peak oil...Peak oil...well maybe...or maybe we should just start looking for more). Any other fuel requires a ton of processing (energy). If people are worried about high gas prices effecting the economy...any other alternative, currently and in the near future costs more.

Now I'm not against researching different ways to do things...they might help us get to a break through. I'm all for advancing science. What I am against is this, "Oh we have _____ (Hydrogen Fuel Cells, Ethanol, etc...)...problem solved." attitude we've got going now.

Hybrids do a good job (why do they have to look funny...see the Prius)...we need advances in re-generative braking, Battery technology (Supercapacitors?), Light weight vehicle manufacturing (composites, Aluminum alloys). These things work for any fuel situation and should be leading the development.

Yes I am also rather dubious of the current political "green" solutions. Call me crazy (and a lot of you will) but the cleanest (near short term) alternative in my mind is Hydrogen burning internal combustion engines with the hydrogen being processed by electricity produced by nuclear power.

The ripple effect is large as well. Corn prices have shot up. This in turn has driven the cost of a gallon milk up. Here in St. Louis for example, a gallon is $5. Just a few months ago in the fall it was under $3 per gallon.Beef prices have risen as well along with cereal cost.

nothing has driven up the price of a gallon of milk like high diesel fuel prices. 3.50 in il and wisc while ky and tn have it at 3.15 but not cows perse.

the ripple effect is the oh so nice odor coming from the biodiesel exhaust pipe. nothing says alternative fule like, HEY is that fish and chips I smell? try getting that from a cracked atom of hydrogen HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH--apologies to the 7-up company.
