Slide Shows and Music Royalities
During the 2006 season, I created several slide shows of pictures taken during the ALMS season, and in addition to the IMSA hardcard issued, I purchased from the Series rights to sell the pictures for a profit. Was going to fork over the money again for 2007, but was asked by a few not to do so (for various reasons), and in looking back, considering I only attended Sebring, Houston, and SLC, was a wise financial decision.
The slide shows were not meant for distribution, but rather as an enhancement to Racingfanatics.com. Along with the PODcasts and Sounds of The Series, the idea was to allow fans of the Series to experience, in a very small way, some flavor of the weekend. Sure, every website has press releases, original material, and photo galleries, but wanting to 'think outside the box', what better way to expand the website than to offer musical slide shows and PODcasts.
Well as quickly as they went up, a select few instantly cried "FOUL and Criminal Act" on the Series forum. To the extent, one member felt the need to write a laywer to inform of my criminal activity. Funny thing, in speaking with my laywer, was informed not to worry, but to be safe, put a disclaimer on the website that the slide shows were for my private use and not to be duplicated. He did mention, that if the recording artist was bored and short on cash, they did have the right to ask me to take down the slide show.
Now present day, I am creating slide shows for parents of athletes and for leagues I am shooting for and wanted to make sure I was well within the law....
My point to this blog? I know several of you either create or wish to create slide shows for either your websites, or for clients (capability pieces). JT has created and shared some excellent work in the past.
I am now using several companies to purchase music tracks and to date, the best one is:
http://www.shockwave-sound.com/index.html
Unbelievable service and quality of recordings is second to none. The Ohio State Univsersity uses many of the trailer themes for their video productions during football games-shown on the HUGE video scoreboard....
What I like about this company, is you search for music based on the "feel" you are looking for and can preview each track.
So, for those here that create or want to create first class slide shows of the ALMS, I would recommend looking at:

JT: Are you going to create a show of the 2007 season? To this day, the music you selected on the show you shared with me, is still the best selection! I just can't see even asking what the royality would be for using the track.

Some people have too much time Isn't there some free music out there as well?? Probably not the great though. Probably sounds like the stuff in an adult films, but of course I wouldn't know. | | SellingAs I am making CDs though for sale (parents and grandparents) to the league, I really need to use licensed music....last thing I need is for me to take a hit about violating copyright laws.... I have already received three pre-orders for CDs so there is an interest.... Look forward to seeing your show JT and think you will have a hard time matching your 06 version, just my opinion.... |

| | Well, one thing I truly cannot stand is the idea of photographers using music that they do not own the royalties to, for anything they use to promote themselves or their businesses. I also detest the idea of photographers always protecting their own photos, while they are using pirated software for their editing or are listening to illegally downloaded music on their iPods. I dont judge those guys or hold anything against them (just as I've had plenty of friends that were pot heads), I just dont agree with what they do. I detest the ideas, not the people. People can say all they want that "if they are board or short on cash they can come ask you to take it down," however, how is that ANY different than someone using one of our photos and just hoping that we dont find out or think we'll just ask them to stop? How many photographers are ok with that? And it goes beyond using music for slideshows or pirating software. It goes on to using downloaded music, it goes to even condoning or watching copied movies, etc. If we are to be able to hold ANY kind of weight when we talk about protecting our copyrighted material, then we must teach by example. How can someone really respect our wishes when we offer to "lend" someone a copy of Photoshop or have a slideshow playing on our website with a hit song that we legally do not have the right to be using? Think about those things the next time you want to make a slideshow or download a song. Would it be right if it was someone else downloading one of your images and using it to make a fake website to promote their business? Here is a good thread about just this stuff on PDN. It has a wide variety of opinions and gets the thought juices flowing. http://www.pdngallery.com/cgi-bin/ub...c;f=5;t=002789 I hope it does get those juices flowing. |

| | Well... I can't fight Jimmy with respect to his points. Though reasonable people are having ongoing reasonable discussions on the matter. But, for fear of you're showing up and painting a red letter on my door, Jimmy, I've removed said slide shows from Trackbytes. By the way, you should read a thread before posting a link to it. Other than the first few posts, it wasn't a very good thread at all. Thanks for your participation. I'm actually surprised you were able to find something on the site that interested you. Oh yea... Go Red Sox. Nice. |

| | Many of us often find ourselves on both sides of the copyright issues. By it's very nature, the digital culture automatically produces copies.... I know I've realized that once I put an image on the web, in reality, the toothpaste is out of the tube. I've also realized... get over it. When I weigh the benefit my business and reputation has gained, compared to any "real revenue" I've ever gained from lo-res internet images, there's literally NO COMPARISON. So... here's a phenomenal argument regarding where digital copyright and the creative world need to get to. This video is not necessarily the most entertaining... AND it WILL require you to concentrate to follow along. If you do that, I promise that by the end, your jaw will be open and you'll have a renewed consideration of where we need to go next. Enjoy! How creativity is being strangled by the law |
