Default Dakar Rally Canceled

It seems that the Dakar Rally will be canceled due to direct threats against it and participants by terrorists! link and link2

This is extremely diasappointing! The worst part is the terrorists will feel empowered now, IMO the Dakar needs to find safer routes in the future or this won't stop. I feel bad for the sponsors and the teams that have poured all their energy into their efforts. Let's hope this never happens to a certain 24 hr race in France!

Not saying it is impossible, but there is a world of difference between the security risks of the Dakar Rally and LeMans!!

It is a bummer. But it's hard to keep an eye on the hundreds of vehicles, scattered across the desert. And they have had problems in the past with bandits, so this would be a pretty credible threat.

Indeed, let us all hope it stays that way! The more likely possibility would be a nut job running on the track like in F1 or protestors blocking the track like the Tour de France. Either way, to see a once a year event cancelled is too bad. Sport being held at ransom for political means is not cool.

That shouldn't be needed in South America! It stays away from Columbia and Venezuela.
