Well, there was also talk of the FIA moving to a format for the WRC using rules similar to Super 2000 in 2010, meaning a spec type gearbox among other things. The only thing is, this gearbox mounts to a transverse motor (inline 4), which Subaru doesn't have (flat 4 boxer). Maybe the economic downturn came at a good time?
