Default Fernandez Racing Set to Switch Chassis

Expect an announcement imminently on Fernandez Racing's switch from Lola to Acura's own Courage-based ARX-01a LMP2 prototype chassis for next season's American Le Mans Series. Honda Racing Development boss Robert Clarke explained that the time was right for a switch.

"We are now at the stage where our own car has proved reliable and does not compromise our engine development program," he said. Team owner Adrian Fernandez will again be partnered by fellow Mexican Luiz Diaz.

It should be an Acura ARX-01b next year.

The Acura development program will continue to be based on the Courage chassis raced by Andretti-Green. "We ultimately have decided that we'll stick with what we have--the Courage," Clarke confirmed. "We think we can get better value out of focusing on other areas of the car. You'll see the rest of the car evolve to the next step. Next year's car will be called the ARX-01b and will be the next evolution of our car.

This isn’t about whether these dire expectations are right or wrong. If they are possible, the possibility has to be addressed. It’s about what should be done. It was one thing – and we did enough of it over the years – to defend “small but high quality” fields while they were increasing from year-to-year. It’s quite another to do so when the trend is in the other direction.

Hmmm, could it be that Fernandez will stay with the 01a and the other teams will go with the 01b? Again, this would be Fernandez doing more engine related development on a more stable platform than the other two teams? Just a thought...

I'd like to think that was just a typo/brainfart. I see no reason why Acura would give Fernandez last year's chassis to run with.
