Potentially could, yes.
But they will not due to the process it would take to make it rigid enough and safety factors. That is why the LG/Riley GT-2 Vette is being built on the C6 chassis instead of the Z06 chassis. GM did not want it built on the aluminum rails and would not sanction it, so any help from GM whatsoever would have been out the window! That is also the reason that the P&M C6.R is still on the C6 chassis also.

A CTS is a brick out of the box... it is a typical American sedan. It is built to wow you with gobs of power. To make it into a race car you need to balance the weight and get the suspension right. These are things the BMW has out of the box. It is much easier to get more power out of an engine and go racing with a balanced car than it is to balance an ungainly car. The WC CTS-V proves that. Look what they had to do to it to race it.

Don't get me wrong. I like the direction that Cadillac is trying to take. I just wish they would concentrate more on making a balanced, light weight car instead of a stylish, unbalanced beefcake. But then again, the latter is always what Cadillac has built.
I am really talking about the new CTS, which is an all new car. The CTS is also between the size of a 3-series and a 5-series and it's weight reflects that. In all seriousness, go drive one. The are not setting any new ground, but have caught BMW...really, they have.

I just really don't see the sense in making a race car (albeit easier to make) that no one buys. I'll drop it now.

Have not driven the new CTS but I did have the pleasure of several months with an '05 CTS-V. I guarantee that car is more than a match for a stock M3 of similar vintage on any course.

BTW- the '09 CTS-V is apparently going to be AWD and 600hp so I think it will be more comparable to the M5/M6.

How about a Caddy vs. BMW GT1 throwdown? Well, I can dream...

How strong are the rumours regarding Corvette moving to a p-car?

I worked for race team that use to drive CTS-V's in Grand Am, and we had a hard time keeping up.. Mind you, we were constantly penalized and slapped with penalties, but we just couldn't keep pace.. The car is like pushing a brick through air. When we drove the Vette's on the other hand, we won multiple championships. So aside from the motor, I'm not so sure how similar the car is in many regards.

Now they just built cobalt's for customers.. but that is turning out to be quite the competitive car!
