 Mowlem, Corsa Motorsports Hopes High In Utah
When Johnny Mowlem and his Corsa Motorsports teammates compete in the May 18 Larry H. Miller Dealerships Utah Grand Prix at Miller Motorsports Park, they’ll be fighting to break their way through a door they’ve stood in front of for the last two races.
The fast three-mile, 15-turn road course here will host the fourth American Le Mans Series race of the 2008 season. Mowlem and the Alabama Motorsports Park-sponsored Ferrari have finished fourth in the GT2 class in the last two races and are hoping to grab their first podium finish of the season in Utah.
“We had some testing scheduled prior to the race at Utah which went very well as we learned quite a bit about the Dunlop tyres and their preferred set-up.” Mowlem said. “We’ve been quite competitive in the last two races even without testing and, with the testing opportunity, I think we’ll be that much better. The GT2 class is amongst the most competitive class the ALMS has, so I just hope we’ll be able to run with the leaders like we did at Long Beach.”
Mowlem and co-driver Gunnar Jeanette are ranked eighth in the GT2 drivers’ standings, despite having withdrawn form the Sebring 12 hours. The GT2 class features production based sports cars from all over the world.
Mowlem is among the most accomplished drivers in the industry, having won America’s most prestigious sports car events, the Mobil One 12 Hours of Sebring and the Rolex 24 at Daytona, as well as other international ranking races around the world.
“We’re aiming for a podium finish in Utah,” Mowlem said. “That’s a tough proposition, given the quality of the opposition. But we’ve been very close in the last two events and we’re going for one better.”
Mowlem flies out a day early to the event as on Thursday he and Jeanette will be filmed doing wind tunnel “sky-diving” for network television, which will be shown during a Series race transmission later in the season.
“Gunnar is a keen sky diver and base-jumper and in fact took me for my first sky dive a couple of years ago.” said Mowlem. ” I’ve never ‘flown’ in a wind tunnel before, but I’m really looking forward to it, and hopefully not looking like too much of an idiot next to Gunnar!” |
